Platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors that are very important in the healing of injuries.
PRP is plasma with a greater amount of platelets than what is typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets — and, thereby, the concentration of growth factors — can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.
PRP treats acute and chronic muscle, tendon and ligament injuries. as well as mild to moderate osteoarthritis.
Currently research shows that PRP is as good as or better than many traditional treatments for issues such as Tennis Elbow, certain tendinopathies, and worn out joints.
Recent research is showing very promising results with high dose PRP.
PRP can provide:
1) Faster healing
2) Cartilage protection
3) Joint fluid biochemistry optimization
4) Decreased long term inflammation
We charge $850 an injection.
Unfortunately, insurance does not cover PRP injections. Here at The SOAR Clinic we only do HIGH DOSE PRP injections, which require a larger blood draw than most clinics. We also use specialized equipment, a double centrifuge system, and ultrasound guidance. While many clinics are charging around $1,000 for low dose PRP, we charge $850 for a superior product.
There are 3 steps to getting a PRP injection:
1) Your own blood will be drawn, anywhere from 30mL to 90mL, depending on what joint will be injected.
2) Your blood is put into a centrifuge that separates the PRP from the red blood cells and other blood products.
3) The PRP is extracted into a syringe and injected into your damaged body part using ultrasound guidance.
A successful PRP injection depends on several factors:
1) Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, Aleve, Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, etc) for 5 days prior to and up to 4 weeks after the injection.
2) Get a good nights sleep before the injection and eat a healthy low carb, low fat diet the days preceding the injection.
3) Your pain will be WORSE for 2-4 weeks after the injection.
4) Sometimes a 2nd or even 3rd injection is needed to optimize results
PRP injections are proven to be very safe, since you are having your own blood products injected. There are some risks including:
1) Infection
2) Pain and swelling at the injection site (which is expected)
3) Bleeding
4) Incomplete pain relief
It is important to understand what PRP is not as well.
PRP is not stem cells.
PRP does not regrow cartilage.
PRP does not substitute surgery for certain tears or joint damage.
PRP does not work for every condition for everyone all the time.
PRP WILL cause increased pain initially, but stimulates a healing response.
It is important to get your information from good resources. PRP is still a relatively new treatment, and is still being researched. Click here for a video that gives an extensive explanation about PRP.
